When former Nike executive Phil Knight was asked what makes a shoe look like a shoe, his answer: the color.
“We are really into the color,” he told NBC News.
“I’m always looking for things that match the color.”
And that means the colors of Nike’s pumps.
The company’s most popular pump shoes are green and blue, and Knight’s shoes are both of those.
But the color doesn’t always match the product.
For example, when Knight designed the Nike Pump Air, the shoe featured a different color from the rest of the shoe, white.
“When I first saw it, I said, ‘I’ve never seen anything like that,'” Knight said.
“The white is the first color I’ve ever seen on a shoe.”
The color isn’t unique to the Nike shoe line, of course.
As of April, Nike had just four other colors in its collection.
The color is a popular color on the market because it’s an iconic part of the Nike brand and can be seen on many other brands’ shoes.
“A lot of people think of a color as a way to distinguish between a pair of shoes,” said Chris Hulsey, a professor of footwear design at the University of Michigan and Nike’s vice president of consumer and brand communications.
“It’s very hard to do that with a shoe.
But I think there are people that will try.
And then you can see people who will just say, ‘Well, that’s a shoe that looks like it’s from a different brand.’
So, we think of color as something that’s sort of universal.”
