The $5,000 pumps, made by the Swiss company H-System, are a major improvement over the $4,500 water fountain pumps sold in Canada, said Tim O’Brien, chief executive of H-system.
He estimates the pumps will sell for $5 to $6,000.
“If you’re going to buy a $50,000 water fountain, you want something that you can easily upgrade and replace,” he said.
While the water fountains sold in China and elsewhere have been relatively cheap, O’Briens is optimistic about the cost of the new pumps.
In China, which has one of the world’s highest per capita water bills, a $500 water pump costs $10,000, whereas a $2,000 pump can be found for less than $1,000 in the United States, he said, adding that a $1.2 million water fountain can be bought in Canada for less.
O’Brien said that while the pump will not be a game-changer for the average homeowner, it will provide a boost for those who want to keep their home water cool.
If you can afford it, I think this is going to be a very good product, said O’Sullivan.
The company is currently manufacturing the pumps in China.
