The first batch of insulin pumps that could be used in homes will be delivered to US hospitals on Friday, according to the maker of the devices.
The InsulinSense technology has already been trialled on a small scale in Australia.
In a video posted to YouTube, a technician is seen in a lab setting performing the first steps of an insulin pump, which is powered by an external battery.
He then takes out the pump, plugs it in and attaches a small device that acts as a remote control.
A few seconds later, the pump starts pumping the desired amount of insulin.
This is just the beginning, the video says.
While the technology has been in use in hospitals in the United States, the manufacturer has not yet demonstrated it in hospitals.
The InsulSense technology is a combination of sensors that are embedded in the pump.
It uses Bluetooth to transmit data to the smartphone, which then transmits that data to a computer.
“We can tell the pump where the insulin is, how much is in it, and where it’s coming from,” Insulsense co-founder Daniela Farr said in a video on Monday.
She added that she hopes the device will be able to monitor the flow of insulin in a patient’s bloodstream, as well as how much it is making the patient feel.
InsulinSense has been developed by Insul Sense in partnership with Boston-based Sanofi-Aventis.
Farr told the BBC it would be difficult to create a consumer version of the insulin pump without having experience with the device itself.
The company’s device uses Bluetooth technology, which allows the pump to be controlled from a smartphone.
The technology is also being tested on the ground in New Zealand.
The first batches of insulin pump devices are expected to arrive in hospitals around the country on Friday.
One of the biggest hurdles is the amount of data the pump needs to process before the device can start pumping.
Another challenge is getting a device to fit in a small space.
Insulin pump manufacturer Insul Sensors has said it plans to test a few sizes of the device, but they will likely be much smaller than the one shown in the video.
Last week, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the first use of InsulSensor technology, and it is expected to be available to hospitals soon.
The devices will be the first in a new generation of insulin that has been created using bio-ink, a substance found in certain bacteria that can be used to seal blood vessels and reduce bleeding.
It’s a similar technology to the kind that is used in the heart pacemaker.
In the last decade, the use of bio-inks has seen the introduction of an estimated 60 billion insulin pumps, according a 2014 report from the World Health Organization.
