Tesla has said it is in talks with the city of San Francisco about installing a new system of charging stations that could make electric cars cheaper to use at gas stations.
The city is seeking a permit for the electric pump installation to be installed on city property near the Interstate 880 interchange.
San Francisco’s request is part of a larger push by electric car makers to help make electric vehicles more widely available.
Electric car maker Tesla has also proposed a system that would allow electric cars to be sold to people who don’t drive electric vehicles, such as in restaurants.
Tesla’s proposed system, which has not yet been approved by the city, would be similar to the one in the Tesla Supercharger network in New York City, where customers can charge their electric cars with up to 100 percent of the electricity coming from solar panels.
A number of other companies, including Tesla, have said they are considering installing chargers at stations to make their electric vehicles even more affordable.
